Hello Friends -

Greetings from Houston!  Not the big one in Texas, but the little one in southeast Minnesota.

It's good to be back on the road after an extended illness that forced me to cancel several concerts. Like most road hardened musicians, I've had my share of headaches and feeling yucky at show time, where the empty garbage can is strategically placed nearby "just in case".  But the show always went on. I apologize for the inconvenience some of you experienced because of the cancellations. We're rescheduling the missed concerts.

So I'm out now until the end of June.  The tour started yesterday in the beautiful town of Preston, Minnesota.  We had a lot of fun!  The next stop is Thursday night in Hokah, Minnesota, then down to Memphis and Nashville, over to North Carolina, back to Chicago and Minnesota.  Check the tour schedule on my website.

Houston (the little one) is my kind of town.  It’s safe.  You feel like you're insulting the locals if you roll up your windows and lock your car doors. Typical of small towns, there are only two places to eat. Tonight I picked the bar and grill. You've probably been to places like this. Deer heads mounted on the walls, pool tables, several big screen TV's all tuned to the same fishing channel.  Heads (human AND deer) turned as I walked in with my sunglasses, shorts and flip flops.  The waitress looked at me cross-eyed when I passed on the burgers in favor of the salad bar.

Driving through town to my motel, I passed the local street gang, a gaggle of 10-12 year old boys on bicycles, all confidently balancing fishing rods across the handlebars as if they've been doing this all of their lives.

My room is at the Sawmill Inn.  The desk clerk is maybe 15 years old: bright, polite and inquisitive.   As I walked in, he said, "You must be Dennis?"  After gathering all the important data he took me to my well-appointed, comfortable room, pointing out the Jacuzzi tub and the generous slice of fresh, homemade banana bread on the counter.  No nuts, just the way I like it.  He even tells me the TV channel for the Minnesota Twins game!  How did he know I would want that information?

I'm a bit flabbergasted at his kindness and competency, and would not be surprised if he brings me cookies and a glass of milk before bedtime, like the "Sisters" did for me at the nunnery after a catholic university concert.

Yep, it's a friendly town and a great start to the tour in picture perfect rural America.  It would not surprise me to find a plaque that says Normal Rockwell slept here.

Peace

Dennis
