Hi Friends -
Last week I was in Estes Park, Colorado, enjoying the sunshine and remembering my first trip there years ago when I was attacked by a crazy hummingbird. More on that in a minute.
The Latest...
Tuesday morning I was soaking in my favorite natural hot spring in the Colorado mountains. Three deer came to visit, curious critters that seemed to be asking if I had permission to soak in THEIR spring! They came to within five feet of me as I held out my hand offering to give them a snout rub. "Who can resist a good snout rub," I thought? Though they declined, one generous doe turned its backside to me and left a special gift that my dog Brewster would have very much enjoyed snacking on. "Ewe!" I know. Still, it was an unexpected, rare and totally awesome encounter.
Last week I participated in the Colorado School Counselor Association's annual conference in Loveland, Colorado, talking about Beads on One String and the curriculum for elementary schools. I am grateful for the wonderful response and look forward to visiting a lot of Colorado schools this next year.
Over the weekend in Fort Collins, CO, I performed a house concert and also for a spiritual gathering. A house concert, as you may know, is where we get intimate in someone’s living room. No sound system, just me, the guitars and a bunch of people who like music. Sometimes people sit so close I feel like asking them to read the set list as my eyes aren't quite as sharp as they used to be. Interested in hosting one at your house? Send me an email. They are fun!
The wind chill was -25F when I pulled out of North Platte, Nebraska yesterday, returning to Minnesota late last night. Burrrrr! I'll be meeting up with my band for a Saturday concert at one of our favorite theaters, the Pioneer Place in St. Cloud.
Now about that hummingbird...
Not all wildlife encounters are as sweet as the deer mentioned earlier. One morning years ago while camping in Rocky Mountain National Park, I poked my nose out of the tent to get a read on the morning weather. As my face broke the plane of the tent door, a hummingbird was right there to greet me - eye to eye, beak to beak. Yikes!
As you know, hummingbirds have this sharp looking, needle nose/mouth thing that, trust me, is intimidating inches from a human eyeball. Severely startled, I gave the appropriate manly response, screaming and falling backwards into the tent.
I didn't see him again, at least not until the next morning when the same scenario played out, this time ending with me instinctively swatting at the little hovercraft while simultaneously doing the appropriate manly screaming thing again.
In my defense, I wasn't fully awake or expecting company at my door. The hummingbird and I probably both needed therapy after those encounters.
Embarrassingly yours and in peace,
